Liftology Ep 4: The Role of Patterns of Learning in Doing

In the Chief Learning Officer (CLO) blog post, "The Cognitive Science Behind Learning," our board advisor Clark Quinn wrote, "At its core, learning is about strengthening the connections between certain neurons. It’s safe to say the neurons that fire together, wire together. Let’s be clear, it’s not like learning strengthens the link between the manager neuron and the leader neuron. The brain doesn’t work like that. Instead, it’s about patterns of activation that represent various things like concepts and actions."

To help learning stick, we need to shift from merely providing content at a fixed time (like in a one-day training) to a blend of providing content that reactivates the patterns over a period of time, via suggested activities and reflections that link the concepts in the content to actions the learners can take in the context of their role.

In other words, provide them with both content AND opportunities to practice the skills they are trying to learn/acquire.
